Signs of Spring

The days are getting longer. The afternoons are feeling warmer. Tulips are appearing at the market! As signs of spring appear each year, our excitement for the return of spring produce begins. As much as we love citrus and pumpkin, there is nothing like the appearance of those first strawberries.

One of our transition-season favorites? Carrot ginger bread. This moist, dense loaf alternates star position with pumpkin bread for half the year. Farm fresh carrot puree gives this a familiar texture and crumb, with a pop of candied ginger on top, and warm spices throughout. Perfect for breakfast, snack, or dessert, with a dollop of yogurt or whipped cream, and a show-stopping addition to your Easter table!

Cozy Up this Winter with Hearty, Whole Grain Cookies

Jen M.Comment

At first thought, you might think that whole grain + cookies don’t go together. Then you remember the nutty flavor of those wheat germ waffles you had, or the bold flavor of a buckwheat crepe. We believe that whole grains and baked goods not only go together, but that whole grain flours make everything TASTE better. As a bonus, they make you FEEL better.

This January you may not have committed to your usual resolutions of giving up all things indulgent, because, let’s face it, none of us went to a zillion holiday parties this past holiday season. That doesn’t mean you can’t commit to trying some new, healthier variations this January.

  • 100% Whole Grain Chocolate Chip Cookies, packed with 6 different whole grain flours, bittersweet chocolate, and a hint of espresso? Check!

  • Salty Honey Peanut Butter Cookies that are dairy free, gluten-conscious, but hearty and satisfying, dunked in toasty flaxseeds? Check!

  • Spicy Chocolate Oat Pecan Cookies that are gluten-conscious, loaded with toasted pecans, oats, warming spiced chocolate, and so much texture and flavor? Check!

  • Sarsparilla Snickerdoodles, made with 100% oat flour and yield hints of root beer flavor? Check!

  • 100% whole grain biscotti, from Ginger Hazelnut (einkorn), to Cranberry Pecan (buckwheat); Bittersweet Chocolate (Rye) to Cashew Date (cornmeal)

  • Brownies! Classic Devil’s Food (entirely whole wheat) or GC Caramel Nib (entirely teff). Double check!

  • The list goes on. We geek out on grains.

Here at Batter we believe that baked goods should be a daily indulgence, not reserved only for special occasions. Over the past several years, we’ve set out to incorporate whole grains into just about all of our baked goods. We’re lucky enough to work with the folks at Keith Giusto Bakery Supply & Central Milling, who are passionate about grains.

If you haven’t noticed by now, we offer many “nutritionally specific” items so everyone can enjoy a treat. In addition to our 100% whole grain treats, you’ll find dairy free, egg free, gluten conscious (or term for gluten-free in a non gluten-free facility), vegan.

Visit us at the Saturday farmer’s market for the best selection of these goodies, and to talk serious grains with our market stall cookie sellers, Jen & Sonia!

If all else fails, we'll still have Thanksgiving pie (and cake).

Jen M.Comment

We don’t need to tell you again how this year has been sh*t. SO… let’s focus on something we can look forward to. PIE. CAKE. CRANBERRY SAUCE.

Whether November 26 means you’ll be at home solo, with one other person, or with a small (safe, please!) group, just make sure you’re surrounded by delicious, comforting food that makes you happy. For us, that’s going to be apple oatmeal bread for breakfast, honey rye apple cider cake for snack, and PIE PIE PIE for dessert. We’ll throw some veggies in that mix, too, but, PRIORITIES.

Pies can be ordered online. For other treats (cake, breakfast goods, bake at home doughs), please check out our handy order form & menu here. If you’re old school, you can print it, fill it out, and drop it off to us at 1517 Pine St. You can call us (415-674-1069). You can email us. You can order a BOUNTY of treats through Good Eggs. So many ordering options, no excuse not to have Thanksgiving treats this year.

Already planning your December holiday gifts? Bravo, advance planner. Get a sneak peek of our holiday menu here.
