UPDATE! LAST CAFE DATE OPEN WILL BE SATURDAY 8/12!
Dear beloved Batter customers,
We have some major changes coming up later this summer, which are truly bittersweet. After 15 years in San Francisco, we are moving our production kitchen across the bay to Berkeley, into the historic Berkeley Kitchens building at 2701 Eighth St in Berkeley. Our new space will provide us with a space for more efficient production, which has always been a challenge in our small (but mighty!) retail shop kitchen, especially during our busiest seasons.
This decision has come after much consideration, as we have such strong roots in San Francisco. Since 2008, Batter has called San Francisco its home, growing from its original shared space in Mission Creek Kitchen behind Stable Café… to MCK on Alabama St (long before that block was cool ha!)… to its shared retail space on Polk Street with Square Meals… to its current (and MOST loved) space on Pine and Polk. The flood of memories is overwhelming, from driving around San Francisco making deliveries in the wee hours, to jumping through allll the city regulatory hoops to open our tiny kiosk and shops… from building out our café locations, to the eerie silence of the city during COVID shutdown.
Since 2020 & the pandemic, both our operations and the San Francisco retail environment have changed, and these changes have also played a large part in the decision to move to a different production kitchen. As “icing on the cake”, if you will, my family has recently grown by two beautiful twins, and the need to be closer to home has become vividly clear. Batter was my first baby, and now an exciting adventure with two more has begun!
However, this kitchen move will also mark the closure of our Pine St café, which has been our flagship presence since summer 2016. Our 555 California St Kiosk, our Ferry Plaza Farmers Market stall, San Francisco special order deliveries, and our wholesale operations in the city will remain open and unchanged. While we will not have a permanent retail front in our Berkeley kitchen space, customer pickups will be available and encouraged, which is exciting for all you East Bay folks who have been clamoring for a Batter location for years!
We look forward to building new and exciting connections in the East Bay as well, and hope that you will soon see Batter goodies in new wholesale partner locations, and an East Bay farmers market or two once we get settled in our new space!
We will be wrapping up our café operations in late July(exact dates TBD), and our café days & hours may change a bit before then as we transition. Stay tuned here and on our Instagram page for updates on café hours and our final move date.
Thank you to all of you who have been SUCH loyal Pine Street customers over the past 7 years – we truly appreciate you and will miss all of your faces so much!
Much love,
Jen (and the Batter team)
